Rebecca Harrison Steele
Education: Stetson University, J.D., University of South Florida, B.A.
Steele worked in the Tampa offices of the firms of Trenam, Kemker and Holland & Knight, and clerked with Judge Charles R. Wilson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. She opened her own practice nearly one year ago primarily representing employees in benefits disputes and appeals. While at Holland & Knight, she worked on pro bono cases, including one in which she co-authored a “friend-of-the-court” brief on the right of children to be represented by counsel in dependency proceedings. In another pro bono case, she filed a Supreme Court petition on behalf of a public housing resident who fought being removed from her home because of a federal "one-strike" law that, in essence, allows the government to evict a tenant if any member of the tenant's household, or even any guest, engages in drug-related criminal activity on or off the premises.
She received her law degree, magna cum laude, from the Stetson University College of Law, and has served as an adjunct professor at the law school. She has worked as a regional director for the ACLU of Florida for almost five years, is a past president of the Board of Directors for WMNF-FM radio and a past president of the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers. She is currently president of both the Florida Association of Women Lawyers and the Hillsborough County Bar Association Trial Lawyers' Section.
